Are you Internal or External?

When people ask me, “what separates you from every other coach out there?” My answer is simple. It’s my soft skills.

Lots of coaches out there are trained via online courses or weekend workshops. Plenty of them have psychology degrees and understand the mind. But understanding something intellectually and actually knowing how to put it into practice are two totally different things.

For instance,  there are two basic types of operating systems that drive the people I coach - internal or external.

Internal push people self-motivate, self-regulate and hold themselves accountable. Their fire is strong and they are motivated by internal standards they set for themselves. These folks do not need outside pressure and in fact, often perform poorly when additional external pressure is applied.

External push people need outside  pressure applied to them to drive results - rules, quotas, goals, bonuses, rewards, consequences.  Knowing their performance is being monitored and evaluated by others is motivating for them. An accountability partner is KEY.

For both types, I am a listening ear, a validator of feelings, a safe place where you can dump every thought that keeps you up at nights, and your biggest cheerleader.

But here’s where my coaching style differs depending on who you are.

If you are an internal push person, my goal is to help you set realistic, manageable goals because you tend to set goals that are sometimes out of reach. I’m all for STRETCH goals but we need to mark milestones along the way as well. I ensure you take time to stop and smell the roses (remember, this is supposed to be fun) and encourage you to celebrate your achievements along the way. I help you release pressure so you can perform your best.

If you are an external push person, I help you create systems, boundaries, incentives and reward/consequence systems that can serve as guardrails for your life or business. Consistency, discipline, and structure are the name of the game for you to reach your goals in the shortest amount of time. I will help you prioritize goals/tasks each session and then expect a report on your progress each time we meet. If you are not doing the work, I will stop coaching you. (Seriously) I help you create pressure so you can perform your best.

My success as a coach is the result of 20+ years managing people, building successful teams, and driving results through a variety of personality types. I know what will work for you. And, I know what won’t.
